Contracted to AIB to provide DB2 systems programming and database administration services on the Acorn/iFlex, SmartDoc and Integrated Markup projects

Systems programming accomplishments included:

• Configured and installed the IBM Tivoli Omegamon XE V4.1.0 performance monitoring product suite using ICAT. The following products were also installed, IBM Tivoli Decision Support for z/OS V1.8.0 and IBM Tivoli Composite Application Monitor for WebSphere V6.1.0

• Configured and installed the DB2 ESE V9.1 for LUW and IBM Tivoli Enterprise Portal Server V6.2 on z/Linux.

• Configured and installed the DB2 ESE V9.1 for LUW and IBM Tivoli Enterprise Portal Server V6.2 on Windows XP Professional.

• Configured and installed an assortment of DB2 Tools for z/OS.

• Configured and installed EZ-DB2 V9.1 product suite aswell as applying maintenance in the legacy environments.

Database administration assignments on these projects included:

• Assigned as the primary contact point for DBA to the Integrated Markup project where my role was to facilitate the project in getting timely service from the DBA group.
• Reviewed the database design prior to implementing in development, system test, user test and finally in production.
• Responsible for carrying out performance analysis using EXPLAIN reports, EZ-DB2 traces and reports, SMF reports, Omegamon performance monitors and traces.
• Collated data from the performance analysis to provide detailed tuning recommendations to the project for poor performing SQL.

• Assigned as the primary point of contact to the SmartDoc project for all mainframe and middleware infrastructure services, including DB2 DBA, DB2 systems, z/OS systems, Data Storage, MQ-Series,and Websphere.
• As the primary point of contact one of my primary objectives was to facilitate the project in identifying and co-ordinating the resources they would require and ensuring that lead times for requesting the resources were met. This was an highly complex project due to the fact that it utilised all the latest technology available on the ZPlex.
• The primary objective of the project was to migrate the existing database from Oracle to DB2 9.1 for z/OS and to enhance and port the backend processing from the legacy system to the new ZPlex.
• Implemented the SmartDoc database ported from Oracle to DB2 9.1 for z/OS into 3 development environments, system test, user test, pre-production and production environments.
• Evaluated IBM Migration Toolkit V2.0.5 and IBM Data Movement Tool for DB2 9.7 to determine which tool would be most suitable for moving approximately 290GB of data, primarily BLOBs, from Oracle to DB2.
• Installed, configured and implemented DB2 ESE V9.1 Federated database server on mainframe USS (Unix System Services) to enable the cross-loader functionality using the DB2 9.1 for z/OS LOAD utility in order to extract data directly from the Oracle database into DB2.

• Undertook a review of housekeeping procedures, particularly backup, recovery and REORG processing, with a view to streamlining and cost cutting while maintaining data integrity, security, recoverability, availability and optimal data organisation. Using the DB2 Automation Tool resulted in the following actions:
• Reduced the number of backups being taken as a result of pre-emptively analysing log record aging, historical statistics and RTS (Real Time Statistics) to determine whether data had actually changed and also whether no archive log records existed for the data and only then taking backups.
• As a result of analysing historical statistics and RTS (Real Time Statistics) determined whether data was in optimal location and what the impact was. This resulted in less unneeded REORGs and more required REORGs with an overall reduction in processing time, costs, etc and increased availability and better data organisation.
• These tasks were fully automated with scheduled batch analysis generating the required housekeeping jobs.

• Day to day applications DBA support making database changes and implementing them in production

• Responsible for application & database performance analysis and tuning using BMC AppTune, BMC MainView and BMC SQL Explorer

• Implement REORG housekeeping for DPROPR production databases

• Responsible for QA of all SQL being developed and going into production

• Mentoring applications developers in the use of SQL and efficient program design

• Provide support services for the configuration and implementation of the Alnova Banking System.

• Upgrade CA Platinum Utilities to allow DB2 V6 exploitation.

• Install and configure DB2 Buffer Pool Tool.

• Tune DB2 Buffer Pools saving 80% I/O and an estimated €1,000,000/year.

• Provide full production support services for installation and upgrade of Chordiant CRM database.

• Install and configure 390 Enablement to support DB2 UDB clients.

• Install and evaluate graphical tools to administer DB2 across disparate platforms.

Contracted to IBM GSA to provide database administration and production support services to the START Street and Address Reference Tables and NPAMS Network Plant Assignment Management System projects. START is 1 of the 6 most mission critical applications within the Telstra organisation, with approximately 1.5 million CICS transactions/day and 25,000 registered users 8,000 concurrent . NPAMS is another mission critical application with approximately 1.3 million CICS transactions and 7000 concurrent users.

Duties on the START project included:

• Database administration, data modelling, logical design and physical implementation.

• Formulate and implement backup and recovery strategy for all production data and application code.

• System performance monitoring, analysis and tuning to optimise performance across 6 CICS regions.

• Maintaining the 3 development, 3 system test, 3 user acceptance test, maintenance, education, stress & volume, production and 12 system integration test environments.

• Production application support providing oncall support for severity 1 & 2 problems.

• Providing oncall support for the production batch window.

• Monitoring production systems, problem analysis and resolution Natural, DB2, CICS, Batch etc. .

• Working with MVS Platform Security to insure that proper security is maintained for DB2 data.

• Responsible for SQL QA function which includes SQL code reviews, training, recommending SQL coding standards and implementing SQL coding standards.

• Managing the Y2K Certification Testing project, including building 3 full testing environments.

Duties on the NPAMS project included:

• Maintaining the development, system test, system integration test, stress & volume and production environments.

Duties on the TSS project included:

• System performance monitoring and tuning using BMC AppTune and Boole & Babbage to achieve optimum load balance and resource utilisation across a Sysplex consisting of three IBM mainframes.

• Investigating system problems, providing recommendations and implementing solutions.

• Assisting project team members with designing efficient Natural DB2 applications.

• Providing training sessions for Natural DB2 applications development, application tuning using BMC AppTune and Boole & Babbage.

Contracted to RJ Reynolds to provide technical support for the implementation of DB2 applications and to develop systems for COINS Consumer Information System .

Duties on the COINS project include:

• Data analysis and modelling using ERWin and Predict.

• Performance monitoring and tuning using Insight to optimise resource utilisation and improve staff skill levels.

• Analysis, design, specification and programming of major direct marketing system for managing consumer information.

• Maintain and enhance Construct models.

• Providing training on DB2 applications development and Construct model usage.

Contracted to Telstra to perform the database administration and systems development for the CIMS project Charging Integrity Monitoring System . In addition to developing systems for CIMS, required to provide technical support for START Street and Address Reference Tables and VAPRS Value Added Products Reporting System . The functional role requires data modelling, database administration, analysis, design, specification and programming of complex systems to meet client requirements.

Duties on the CIMS project include:

• Performing DB2 database administration using the BMC Utilities. This included system performance monitoring, tuning, maintaining tables, performing timely backups, reorgs and loads on the database.

• Data modelling using IEF Composer and maintaining the Predict data dictionary.

• Ensuring analysis, design, specification and programming of systems is performed accurately, to client specification, in compliance with ITG Information Technology Group standards and within time frames agreed with client representatives.

• Construct model administration.

• Maintaining existing systems to agreed service levels.

• Under general direction, formulate and recommend new standards and advise on operational aspects of the system.

• Providing technical advice to the team and to the Project Manager.

• Monitoring and reporting to the Project Manager on assigned project deliverable s.

While involved with the VAPRS project, duties included coding and testing programs, demonstrating application developments to business representatives, and discussing with them the required system functionality. The VAPRS project had a function point count of 750 and was successfully developed using RAD Rapid Applications Development methodology in 30 man weeks.
